Who We Are

The Backpacks for Kids Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing children in need with quality backpacks & school supplies and increasing literacy rates in the Greater Boston area. The Backpacks for Kids Foundation was founded in 2001 by Dover-Sherborn High School students Kaitlin Murphy, Kristen Raymond, Kim Roth, and Leslie Wardwell. The BFK organization has passed through many families in the Dover-Sherborn communities over the years. It started with 19 backpacks and in 2023, we donated 824 backpacks.

The Foundation is currently led by Director Sophie van Rhijn and Co-Directors Veronica Caldwell, Emily van Rhijn, Olivier van Rhijn, and Grant Mayer.

We are fundraising for school year 2024/2025. Our goal is to raise $20,000 before June 1 to donate 850 backpacks. We have maintained relationships with a.o. Healthcare for the Homeless in Boston, South Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC), Home for Little Wanderers and MassSTART.

Our Focus
