Who We Are

The Backpacks for Kids Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing children in need with quality backpacks & school supplies. As a result we are increasing literacy rates in the Greater Boston area. The Backpacks for Kids Foundation was founded in 2001 by Dover-Sherborn High School students Kaitlin Murphy, Kristen Raymond, Kim Roth, and Leslie Wardwell. The BFK organization has passed through many families in the Dover-Sherborn communities over the years. It started with 19 backpacks donated in 2001 and in 2024, we donated 783 backpacks.

The Foundation is currently led by Co-Directors Emily van Rhijn, Olivier van Rhijn and Veronica Caldwell.

Right Now

We are fundraising for school year 2025/2026. Our goal is to raise $25,000 before July 31st to donate 750 backpacks. We have maintained relationships with a.o. Boston Healthcare for the Homeless, South Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC), o.a. WIC-Women Infants and Children, Voices Against Violence, and MassSTART.

Our Focus

The Backpacks for Kids Foundation focuses on the one thing that children need in order to be successful: their education. You can help change a child's life by donating to this noble cause that is run by the Dover-Sherborn high-school students.
